When New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Fats Domino’s house was submerged and his Steinway piano remained under water for several weeks. It was later recovered and restored, and can now be seen at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Late December, a couple of years ago, I was leaving a restaurant at Pier 5 and saw a guy feeding breadcrumbs to the seagulls. I shot a few frames on my iPhone, and cropped later to isolate one of the birds.

The painting, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, by John Singer Sargent, reminded me of the famous Las Meninas, by Velázquez. As I was getting my iPhone and asking myself how to break the symmetry of the scene, a person in a red shirt decided to sit down and solved the problem for me. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
